Walter Hilborn, who was born in Boston, Massachusetts, was an attorney and leader in the Jewish community. Following his move to New York City, he helped Rabbi Stephen Wise found the Jewish Institute of Religion (1922). Later, he was instrumental in the Institute's merger with the Hebrew Union College (1950). After he moved to Los Angeles (1929), he served as the president of the Los Angeles Welfare Planning Council; he was also an officer of the city's Jewish welfare groups for 45 years. In 1972, the Walter S. Hilborn Chapel of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, in Los Angeles, was dedicated.
